Distance and Dimension at Makkah

This is a "primitive" and also a "suggestive" craft project. It will look rather unpolished when done and only suggest Makkah.

You will need:

  • Yellow construction/colored paper
  • Dark gray construction/colored paper
  • Dark blue construction/colored paper
  • Black construction/colored paper
  • white un-lined paper
  • 5 cheap paper plates or 3 old cereal boxes*
  • ruler and compass would be a benefit
  • black tempra or spray paint
  • pencil
  • glue
  • scissors
  • sequins (for stars: blue, red, yellow and white are fine. What we've tried to suggest with our stars are the opaque white sequins that reflect rainbow colors.
  • OPTION - black crayon or marker

* = If you can find neither the paper plates of cereal boxes use 10 pieces of paper

1. Take your yellow sheet of construction/colored paper and draw 2 inverted Vs. You can do this either freehand or by using a ruler. The Vs should not touch, in fact the ends of the V should actually be wider apart than the apex of the Vs.

The apex of the Vs should line up as closely to parallel to one another as possible.

Then either free hand or by compass draw a circle. This will be the moon.

2. Cut along the outer edge of both V's. This will, insha'Allah, form the wall.

3. Taking the dark blue construction/colored paper place your yellow inverted V on top. Then decide on the paper where you want the inverted V to be. Glue it in place.

After glue dries you can gently erase any lines still visible. Or you can wait and outline the wall with black crayon or marker when through. This out line may cover up pencil lines

4. Take the white un-line paper. This paper will serve as the primary template for your "3 - dimensional Kaba".

Now looking at the dark blue paper and the yellow inverted V wall decide how big you want the Kaba to be. You may even want to measure it.

Lightly draw the Kaba in on the white unlined paper. Now before you cut the Kaba template out, look at the bottom of the paper plate or cereal box you are using -- do your dimensions fit into the bottom of the paper plate?

5. If so begin cutting out the Kaba template. If not, amend your dimensions. And check again.

6. Using the template as a guide draw your Kaba dimensions on the dark gray construction/colored paper and on the bottom of the 5 cheap paper plates. (If using old cereal boxes draw in 5 Kaba shapes from your template. If using the 10 pieces of paper use as much paper as you need to draw 10 Kaba shapes.

7. Cut out all Kaba shapes you just drew (on the dark gray construction paper, the paper plates, the cereal boxes and/or the 10 pieces of paper).

8. After cutting out all the Kaba shapes glue together all the:
paper plates Kaba shapes - or -
cereal box Kaba shapes - or -
white paper Kaba shapes

While gluing the Kaba shapes all together try to make sure that they fit as close to exactly as possible on top of one another. Wipe off excess glue. Let dry a few minutes, so that nothing slides when handled.

9. When dry enough take the glued pile of Kaba shapes and paint or spray paint the edges (the sandwich side of paper). Make sure the side are all covered. If you get paint on the top and bottom of the pile that's all right but, DO not intentionally paint the top and bottom as it may effect adhering ability.

Let stand to dry thoroughly.

10. After paint has dried glue the gray construction/colored paper Kaba shape to the top of the pile. Try to make sure sides and corners match as closely as possible. Wipe off excess glue.

11. Let stand to dry to the point that when handled the gray paper does not move. At this point cut off excess paper so that the paper plate, cereal box, 10 paper pile, does not stick out past the gray Kaba shape. (You may need to touch up the paint, if so try not to get paint on the gray paper)

12. Using the Kaba template cut out shape on black construction/colored paper. You will glue this shape on top of the new gray Kaba shape. However, to let some of the gray paper show you will need to cut this black shape shorter on the horizontal than the template.

13. Match horizontal edges at the top of both Kaba shapes and glue black paper onto the front of the gray paper.

14. From the yellow construction paper you have left cut a strip wide enough to reach each vertical end of the black Kaba shape. Place on black Kaba so that the long horizontal line is parallel the bottom of the Kaba shape. Place toward the top of the Kaba. Glue in place

12. Glue this final Kaba shape where you invisioned it on the dark blue construction paper, in front of the inverted V wall.

13. Now cut out the moon that you drew on the yellow construction/colored paper and glue in place.

14. Next glue the sequin stars in place by placing a little bead of glue on the blue construction/colored paper. Then place a sequin on top of the bead of glue. Do not press into place, but make sure glue is in as much contact with the sequins as possible.

Let dry. As an option you may want to lightly outline the yellow wall with the crayone or marker.

The Kaba shape you made raises the shape off of the base paper, giving it a 3-D effect.
