Flowers 4 Eid (or anytime)
Tissue Paper Flowers

Having flowers to brighten our homes. schools and offices is always a wonderful thing, alhumdillillah. When they are added to an Eid they make the days especially joyous. But during the winter months, in northern climates where the sun rises late, sets early and is very low, flowers can assist those with Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD.

In the depths of winter many people long for Allah's cheeriness of spring and color. Making these tissue paper flowers is fun and brightens up rooms and spirits, they also make any room festive for occassions like Eid.

Insha'Allah we will have actual pictures of this craft soon, our graphics do not do this project justice.

You will need:

  • 5 - 7 pieces of assorted colors of craft tissue paper. Cut into 12 inch x 12 inch sheets.
  • stapler with staples
  • string

For this initial project one of your sheets of craft tissue paper must be yellow. There after any time you want to make these flowers you don't have to include yellow. After the yellow sheet pick different colors of tissue paper. To add depth to your flower do not choose all the same color in the sheets. All different colors will yield a rainbow flower, flowers with very close shades of paper (like red, pink, white and/or salmon) will yield a more conventional looking flower.

1. After choosing your colors arrange your sheets of craft tissue paper neatly so that all corners and sides are not askew as they lay on on top of another. Your yellow sheet must be on the outside of this pile.

2. The taking one side of your pile of craft tissue paper begin to fan (or accordion) fold your sheets. Try to keep each fold even with the last.

3. When that is completed, with out opening your fan, find the middle of your paper and staple it once. Make sure the staple goes all the way through, coming out and closing on the other side.

4. One you have the staple secured, tie a string around the middle, leaving the ends long and free (dangling). This will allow you to tie your flower on to a curtain rod, chair, etc. or give you a "hanger" from which you can anchor it to a bulletin board, etc.

5. After string is tied turn the yellow side of your flower face up (sting should dangle from other side). Then very gently take one end of the yellow craft paper and pull, Gently, toward the center, toward the staple. If you pull hard or in a rush you will rip the paper.

6. After gently pulling that side toward the center do the same to the other side. Then begin gently pulling each side of each color toward the center. . If you pull hard or in a rush you will rip the paper.

7. Once you have all the sides brought up, begin "arranging" them and camouflaging the ends of the sheets so that each layer looks as if it is continuous.

There, insha'Allah, you are done!

For a variation after stapling in set 3, clip the ends of you fan in a curvy, wavy, pointed, or rounded pattern. Continue on with the steps.
