Veggie Tales and Muslim Families

.

Many Muslim families have been curious about Veggie Tales, a Christian animated video series, which features various everyday vegetables "acting" out stories. Very often these families shy away from the delightful, faith and value based videos. They rightly wonder if they are appropriate for Muslim children.

Let us put those fears to rest. Many or most of these videos present Judeo/Christian/Muslim values without a questionable under current. These videos present topics such as how even little lies can be dangerous, how rumors and gossip can destroy a community and cause neighbor to persecute neighbor, or how God, Allah, is bigger than any fear or peer pressure, and more. The animated format, well thought out dialog and story line are enjoyable to both children and adults.

They are "accessible" to children and fully reach their target audience. (It is MHSNR's hope that one day, insha'Allah, Muslim video productions for children will be so consistently accessible while being entertaining as well as educational. )

In most videos the Bible and biblical verse is mentioned at the end when the two main characters, Larry (a cucumber) and Bob (a tomato) ask Quertie (the computer) about the lessons learned. The video can be turned off at this point, or left on for family discussion about the Bible and the Qur'an. Often Muslim families use the videos and discussion time afterward to reinforce hadith or ayat/surah reading.

Like all videos, parents should watch first and be sure it squares with family values and interpretation. We recommend starting with Larry Boy and the Fib From Outer Space and Larry Boy and the Rumor Weed.

Videos can be purchased on-line or at Walmart, Walgreens,Amazon.com and Borders.

Your Support Is Needed

Please help us continue to provide this resource by helping us pay for the overhead (monthly web/internet fees and domain name fees). Insha'Allah your support will also help us expand our offerings from downloadable text/workbooks, to on-line games and more choices for Muslim homeschooling families.

We have no plans to make this site a pay as you go site. We like the idea of FREE resources to all who are looking (Muslim homeschoolers, Muslim teachers, Islamic schools, and non-Muslim teachers/homeschoolers who are looking for projects to help their studies when discussing Islam. -- Educators throughout the world).

But free resources have their downside. This website is currently paid for by web advertisement (which we do not, and cannot charge a lot for) homeschooling workshops and speaking engagements and out of pocket payments by MHSNR's director. That's it! Many times we either barely squeak by, or cannot cover it all. At that point sometimes heart breaking decisions are made.

We know this site is valued, the world over. We receive email comments from Muslims and non-Muslims about this every day. (And yes, they make us feel very good.) Help us continue to offer more and more resources and pay for what it already here.

A gift of $5.00, $10.00, $25.00 every so often, will go along way to maintaining what we are doing, creating more on-line resources, and serve as seed money for new projects and resources (like resuming publication of Al-Madrasah Al-Ula, our magazine for Muslim homeschoolers, and our Muslim homeschooling conventions)

Send assistance to:

Or you can help us using PayPals through MasterCard, Visa or even your own checking/savings account (if you open a free Paypals account)

Jazak'Allah Khairin,
Thank you

News Update 9/21/2002

Dear Muslim homeschooler and educator,

Assalamu alaikum

This will be the last "announcement" in this space on this website!

Many things are changing and will change on this website in the next few weeks and months, as we move to serve you better.

Through our web addresses (www.muslimhomeschool.com and www.mhsnr.com) MHSNR has grown and become major developer and contributor to Muslim education in the US and Canada. Alhumdillillah!

On top of this we are also accessed and used by non-Muslim homeschoolers, teachers, parents, etc. to enhance what they teach and their lesson plans. Many have sent us wonderful notes.

This is not just a homeschooling site any more... it is a site for educators
(be they professional, homeschoolers, or both)
and parents who are involved in their child's education!

But, homeschoolers, never fear, you are still our primary focus.

With these changes, insha'Allah, we will be able to offer you more educational enhancements for your classroom and homeschool, publish all those workbooks/textbooks/lesson plans etc. that are waiting in the wings (material much needed and desired by our schools and homeschoolers) and quite possibility restart the publishing of "Al-Madrasah Al-Ula!" Insha'Allah.

To keep up with the announcements of all that is new and added, deleted, changed etc. to this site please subscribe to our new on-line newsletter. You can either email your subscription or subscribe over the web. Please do no ask us to add you as we cannot due to topica rules.

This site will continue to be a real "working" site, in every sense of the word. It may be a bit dated, primitive and ugly, but it loads faster for our non-cable modem viewers, and reflects our view that the content is more important than "coolness". We'll save all the cool graphics, etc. for our publications.

So, see you on the newsletter!

Salam,
Cynthia R. Sulaiman
Director, MHSNR
