Islamic Calligraphy Unit Study
WEEK 1
Chapter 1: The Six Major Scripts of Arabic Calligraphy

Lesson Plans:
a. Have student read lessons for chapter 1, and make sure student keeps a
notebook outlining all key points pertaining to lessons.
b. Homework/Classwork: Create 5-10 written questions, related to the lessons,
for
student to answer.
c. For Fun: Print out enlarged sample of each script style and have student
name/identify the script.
d. Extra Credit: Read (Calligraphic) Instruments

to create Arabic calligraphy.
e. For Assessment: Have student write on a piece of paper three key facts
about each script.
WEEK 2
Chapter 2: Early and Late Calligraphy Development

Lesson Plans:
a. Have student read Early (Calligraphic) Development and write a 1 paragraph
article focussing on the famous Islamic calligraphy artists Ibn Muqlah,
IbnAl-Bawwab, and Yaqut Al-Musta'simi.
b. Have student read Later (Calligraphic) Development and write a small
paragraph describing the contributions of later artists to the field of
Islamic Calligraphy.
c. Assessment: Grade assignments.

Chapter 3: Famous Contemporary Islamic Calligrapher
