Presentations and Workshops

From award winning author, storyteller and educator Rukhsana Khan

(you may need to scroll down to these presentations on Rukhsana's website)

For more information about presentations and Rukhsana Kahn visit her website or email her, rukhsana@rukhsanakhan.com

Through the Mists of Muslim Time: Before Rukhsana became an author and storyteller, she graduated from college as a scientist. When the Ontario Science Centre asked her to prepare a storytelling event for their Timescape exhibit she combined her love of science with her love of story to form this engaging presentation. She talks about the origins of the Gregorian calendar vs. the origins of the Islamic calendar and the different ways in which cultures tell time. Using audience participation she illustrates the lunar calendar and the phases of the moon.

Grades K-8, Millenium Presentation: Based on the presentation she developed for the Ontario Science Centre's Timescape Exhibit, Rukhsana discusses how different cultures measure time. In the Gregorian calendar it is the year 2000, but in the Islamic calendar it is the year 1421. She tells the story of the Hijra, the migration between Mecca and Medina which is the incident that began the Islamic calendar. Using volunteers from the audience, she demonstrates the lunar phases and how the lunar calendar works. This presentation requires an overhead projector to represent the sun.
