He also noticed how everyone in the congregation listened, quietly, politely and respectfully. No one spoke or gorssiped in the back or made it hard for everyone else to hear. When an infant sitting with her mother began to cry, the mother took the child off to a room with a window that allowed her to still see what was going on.

Dawud found out later that this was called the"cry room." There were cribs, infant toys, rocking chairs and a changing table in this room. There were also speakers in the room so that the mother could still hear the service and sermon while attending to the needs of her child. "Nice idea," he thought.

At the end of the service Dawud joined everyone in another large room called the "fellowship hall." Here the congregation was served punch, coffee and pasteries. There the women and men talked about the sermon, their week, what they were doing or planning in the coming days. They shared concerns, made a list of who to pray for during the week, and generally had a good time.

John's mother and some other women in the church gathered together to discuss what they would be doing at the next "circle" meeting. John explained that the women's circle meets during the week for Bible study, to make blankets for the homeless and slippers for children who are in the hospital, or gather used clothing and nick nacks for the churches garage sale. Dawud smiled for his mother was in the same type of group at the masjid.

Dawud found the whole experience enjoyable and enlightening, though he didn't agree with a lot that was said and the shirk made him uncomfortable. Still, finding out about someone else's faith lead him to a greater understanding of John and his family.

Dawud hopes that on Friday, John will feel the same way about Jummah.
